Frederic F. Smith
fsmith@alleghenymillwork.com

Fred started building things when he was seven years old when he converted an old work bench in the family basement into a two-level fort. The official start of his construction career was in the early 1970's when he was hired as a carpenter by a builder of upscale new houses in the North Hills of Pittsburgh. He went from not even owning a tool belt to crew leader in three years. Seeking more challenges, Fred became a self-employed contractor and woodworker specializing in architectural millwork. The next challenge was a two-year stint as partner in a company that did glazing, stained glass and woodworking.

In 1979, Fred helped to start Allegheny Millwork as a source for restoration doors, windows and trim for the historic rehabilitation that that was taking place in the North Side and other Pittsburgh neighborhoods. Allegheny Millwork grew steadily into a full-service lumber yard and architectural millwork shop.

After running his own shop and construction business for several years, Fred joined Bennett Supply Company as a Marvin Window specialist in 1993. When Marvin changed its distribution pattern in 2007, Fred came back to Allegheny Millwork as a salesman. All of these experiences, along with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Ohio University, Master of Arts degree from the University of Rochester and a Master of Arts in Teaching degree from the University of Pittsburgh, have given Fred a unique background in residential and light commercial construction, architectural history and marketing.
